For piano, you don't need a full piano to start. A keyboard or digital piano is a great starting point until you're ready to invest in a full piano. For other instruments, yes, you'll need your own, but you don't have to spend a lot. There are affordable options and second-hand instruments available. Always ask your tutor for recommendations or check out our buyer’s guides for more info.
You get out what you put in – so what are you prepared to do? :)
At a minimum, beginners should look to practise 3 or more times a week for at least 10 minutes. Consistency is key. Muscle memory builds with frequency, so 1 hour spread across 3 days (3 20-minute sessions) would probably be more effective than a single hour on a Saturday.
I’ve found that the “sweet spot” for optimal progress tends to range between 15 and 45 minutes per practice session for most people. You can always do longer, but you will likely get diminishing returns without taking a break due to loss of focus.
